Villaboard® Soffit Lining - FAQs

I am designing a new modern home and my living area opens out onto an outdoor entertainment area.I would like the ceiling to look as if it continues into this area. What can I use that is suitable externally?
Answer: Villaboard can be used both internal and external ceiling / soffit applications. The jointing must be finished with a Villaboard bedding and finishing compound.
Does an eave (or soffit) help with energy efficiency?
Answer: Energy efficiency is affected by a number of factors - the location and orientation of the house, the climate, the design, the size and number of windows – as a result energy efficiency needs to be calculated on a case by case basis – talk with your builder/architect to obtain more information about your dwelling.
I am installing Villaboard® Lining into a large soffit. Do I need to install control joints?
Answer: Yes, locations of control joints will depend on a number of factors. Refer to the technical manual for further information.
I want to put up the Villaboard® ceiling, flush the joints and paint it before the roof is finished. Is this possible?
Answer: It is recommended that the roof be fully installed before the ceiling is commenced due to frame settlement, and moisture issues.
What are the jointing options for control joints when using Villaboard® as an eave or soffit?
Answer: Expressed joints or Proprietary type control joint system.
What does an eave (or soffit) do?
Answer: Eaves provide shading to walls and windows and also throw rain water clear of walls and windows immediately below, thus reducing the likelihood of water penetration – they operate in much the same way as an umbrella provides shade and protection from rain to your upper body.
What is a soffit?
Answer: A Soffit is the underside of a structural component such as an overhanging roof of a building extending out from the plane of the building walls and finished with a soffit lining.
What is an eave?
Answer: Eaves are the lower part of a pitched roof or edge of a flat roof projecting beyond the wall face, usually finished of with fascia/gutter and eaves sheeting.
When Villaboard is used as the soffit lining where the soffit is 600mm or less wide, what is the spacing of the control joints?
Answer: The control joints must be provided at maximum of 7.2mm.
Why do I need to install control joints when I use Villaboard®?
Answer: Because of the extremes of temperature that may be experienced, especially under a metal roof, outside the home. The use of control joints is to allow for any anticipated movement in the soffit.
